Winter Fashion Trends - How transition from Summer to Winter flawlessly

Although she has taken her sweet time arriving (not that any of us are complaining – we’re totally on board with “fashionably late”), Lady Winter has finally decided to grace us with her presence.

It’s time to wave goodbye to breezy white summer dresses, silk skirts, camisole tops and slip dresses …. or is it? The beauty of Sydney’s pseudo winter weather (apart from the glorious luke-warm temperatures – sorry to rub it in Melbourne), is that your beloved summer wardrobe pieces do not need to be banished to hibernate for the next three months in the lonely depths of the recesses of your wardrobe. With the addition of a few key staples, plus a little bit of re-imagining, your summer favourites can remain by your side through the cooler months.

PRETTY / TOUGH TREND

The Pretty / Tough trend has been around for some time now, and won’t be going anywhere soon. As the name suggests it refers to the fusion of pretty, delicate staples mixed with tougher, edgier elements. Think soft romantic meets biker girl.

There is something so timeless and uber cool juxtaposing these looks against each other. It takes the pretty from saccharine sweet territory to edgy in an instant. We’re talking white flowing maxi dresses paired with a leather biker and converse, or a floral number with biker boots. Or even with this season’s must have – the cowboy boot. If you feel this look is a little is too daring, you can dip your toes into this trend by way of colour choices and textures - studded leather (jacket or boots) paired with the softest silk, or baby / florals paired with jet black.

LAYERING

Slip dresses are not only flattering for most body shapes, but also feel like a cloud embracing you when wearing them. And we love that they are a styling no brainer in summer. Just slip it on (see what we did there?) with a pair of strappy heels or simple slides, and you’re ready to go.

The ease of this does not need to be lost in winter. Simply layer under (or over if you’re bold enough) a cosy cashmere knit, add some ankle boots or trainers and you’re out the door in no time. The same works for your silk skirt. When the temperature dips low enough, the look can be polished with a toasty warm overcoat.

There is no need to leave those flirty summer dresses out in the cold either! These little pretties can be easily diversified by layering over a long sleeved button up shirt, preferably in a neutral colour, or over a black turtle neck. Add ankle boots, coat and beanie and voila!

DRESS OVER PANTS TREND

This has been a popular trend amongst bloggers and street style stars for the past few seasons. We are looking at you Leandra Medine and the holy book that is Man Repeller.

The key with this tricky trend is to keep the pants or jeans a skinny fit - leather leggings and a black skirt are a match made in heaven. The look is best achieved with a midi to longer length dress or skirt. By keeping the dress / skirt and the pants a similar colour it will create an illusion of height. The fact that you have missed your leg waxing appointment works as an extra incentive to take this trend for a test drive.
